These websites provide ideas for hands-on science and social studies lessons. You can incorporate these activities into your program to offer school-age children fun opportunities for learning.

Science

  • Everyday Science and Other Hands-on Activities

    The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) website provides a wealth of simple activities for children in kindergarten and elementary school. The activities are easy to implement in afterschool programs and require very few materials. The topics include studying shadows, creating flying machines, science in the kitchen and the supermarket, and many more. The website also has interactive educational computer games that children can play independently.

  • Web Adventures –Explore Science with Interactive Online Games

    Rice University’s Center for Technology in Teaching and Learning offers award winning free online games that are both engaging and educational. This website is designed for students in middle school and high school. Children review an online learning module to become and work with expert scientists to explore various science careers, reconstruct crime scenes, study neurology, and learn how diseases affect the human body and more.
